Bioshock is one of my personal favorite games I have played. I find this plot twisting and a mind bending story interesting, because the game is built more for the experience not for the challenge. Unlike in Modern Warfare Bioshock has a solid storyline and sticks with it its archetypal. In a way very realistic how you may ask the question isn't in the actions of the characters more of the ideals that surround Andrew Ryan? This man was fed up with the modern day of the 1940's and decided he would make his own "Utopia" or rapture. Where there was no law.
As you can imagine this didn't turn out well after 10 years. Eventually products that Ryan and the other great minds of rapture produce start to cause chaos. People became demented, paranoid and every other personality disorder you can think of at this point. The city is pretty much in ruin beyond repair.  The walls of Rapture were falling then the civil war took place.
The civil war was a huge war waged between two major powers Frank Fontain and Andrew Ryan Fontain was a secret agent sent to take control of Rapture. In the game you come in right after this war and neither side has really gone anywhere except for the fact that Fontain has the one advantage Ryan doesn't. That advantage is you, you are a man who was genetically altered to be a dog,(servant) as soon as someone even utters the words "would you kindly" you become a slave immediately and do thier bidding. Eventually you find out this truth and find a way of getting rid of the mind control. Beyond that point you keep Fontain from taking control and save the day now what drove Ryan to this point? The fact is that Ryan was disgusted by the conspiracies the government  he had a phrase that pretty much summed up his thoughts; "Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow"? Yeah I pretty much love Bioshock.
